The Solitude of Becoming

The Thousands of Tiny Decisions No One Sees
People see the finished book.
They see the cover reveal.
The launch.
The interviews.
The celebration.
What they rarely see are the thousands of tiny decisions that came before it.
I sit in the silence of typing words most days...
Writing a memoir isn’t glamorous.
It’s not coffee shops and inspiration.
It’s sitting alone with a sentence and asking:
“Is this true?”
Sometimes the answer is yes.
Sometimes the answer is, “Not yet.”
So you keep listening.
You delete paragraphs you loved because they were beautifully written but not deeply honest or if you’re me, too honest for most to read.
You change a single word because your body tells you the old one belongs to the person you’re no longer becoming.
You stop halfway through a chapter because something feels just slightly out of alignment, even if you can’t explain why.
From the outside, it looks like editing.
From the inside, it’s transformation.
I’ve realized that’s true of life, too.
The biggest changes rarely happen in the moments people applaud.
They happen in the silence.
When no one is watching.
When there isn’t an audience.
When the only witness is the quiet voice inside you asking, “Is this still true?”
I’ve come to believe that becoming isn’t built on grand gestures.
It’s built on thousands of tiny decisions made in solitude.
The decision to tell the truth instead of the polished version.
The decision to stay with the discomfort instead of rushing to certainty.
The decision to trust the subtle nudge that says, “This sentence isn’t quite right.”
Or...
“This relationship isn’t quite right.”
“This career isn’t quite right.”
“This life no longer fits.”
Those moments don’t usually look dramatic.
Most of the time, they look like someone sitting quietly at a keyboard.
Or taking a long walk.
Or staring out a window.
Nothing appears to be happening.
But everything is.
Because every honest decision reorganizes something inside us.
And eventually, those tiny decisions become a life.
People often ask when everything changed.
The truth?
I don’t know if there was one moment.
I think it was thousands.
Thousands of tiny moments where I chose honesty over performance.
Presence over urgency.
Truth over comfort.
Looking back now, I don’t think those decisions simply produced a manuscript.
I think they produced me.
And perhaps that’s the quiet miracle of becoming.
Long before the world sees what you’ve created...
you’ve already been transformed by creating it.
Raised by Fire releases November 17. I’ll be writing here from inside the making of it.
